The Tozan Educational Experience

Tozan which, translated into English, means “east mountain,” refers to the region in Japan where the original Japanese pottery kilns were built. The Tozan kiln is a unique type of traditional Japanese wood-fired kiln. There are only three Tozan kilns in existence in the world today: one in Himeji City, Japan (sister city of Phoenix, Arizona) one at Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, and one in British Columbia at Nanaimo.
As Flagstaff is in the middle of one of the largest Ponderosa pine forests in the world, it was an ideal place to build a Tozan Kiln. The dream of Yukio Yamamoto and Dr Don Bendel, the first Tozan Kilns in the Western Hemisphere were constructed in 1985 with the assistance of locals, students and visitors.

Yukio Yamamoto originally came to Phoenix, Arizona in 1984 through a cultural exchange program where he served as a ceramic instructor at ASU.

Dr. Don Bendel, who was the head of the Ceramics discipline, met Yukio in Phoenix and had the foresight to bring him to Flagstaff to give him the opportunity to teach summer workshops in ceramics.

The second part of this inspirational dream was to build a Japanese Garden and Teahouse on the Tozan kiln site.

The NAU Foundation recently set up the Tozan Garden Fund, which will be used to build and maintain the traditional Japanese Garden and Teahouse.

The Japanese Garden and Teahouse will include both plants indigenous to Northern Arizona and more traditional Japanese Garden elements, including ponds, streams, waterfalls, iris gardens, stone foot bridges and stone carved lanterns. In the center of this beautiful garden will be an authentically crafted Teahouse where visitors and locals may share in traditional tea ceremonies.

The Japanese Garden and Teahouse will embody importance of understanding, appreciation and cultural exchange between the Western and the Japanese cultures.
